First aid is an immediate lifesaving treatment given to an ill or injured person until full medical treatment is made available. This timely support comprises a simple medical treatment technique that is the most vital to the victims and is often life-saving. Anybody can get themselves trained to administer first aid, which can be easily performed by using minimal equipment. Schools should include basic first aid training skill

It is always good to introduce kids to first aid skills in the schools themselves as it is mandatory in our modern and stressful lifestyle. Having first aid knowledge is becoming very essential in our day-to-day life.

The Main Aims of First Aid are;

To save a life.
To promote recovery.
To forbid worsening of victim’s condition.
Below mentioned are 10 important steps that must be followed while applying first aid skills.

1) ABC of First Aid skills

If the victim is in an unconscious condition or fainting then you must check his ABC first;

A – Airway
B – Breathing
C – Check pulse
You may also provide the victim with artificial respiration and revive breathing by pumping fresh air through the mouth.

2) Do not move the injured person

Let the injured person be still or unmoved, especially if he is injured because of a fall, crash, or any other violence, move him if it is extremely important in order to save his life. Allow him to lie down just in case his spine is injured or due to any internal injury.

3) Be very quick

Rapid treatment is very essential, just in case the person is bleeding swallowed poison or if his breathing has stopped because of drowning, etc. Remember every second counts. If the person remains breathless just for 3-minutes then he may die, therefore, regular artificial breathing should be given.

4) Start First aid only if the situation is not critical

You can quickly start with the first aid by making the injured person lie down. If he wants to vomit and if there is no neck injury, then you may turn his body and head to one side to prevent choking. Keep his body warm with a blanket.

5) Immediately Call for Medical Help

Call for medical help as early as possible while you are applying for first aid. The doctor at the hospital must be informed about this emergency and must be asked to take immediate action till they arrive.

6) Examine the patient gently and regularly

If the person is injured or fired the patient must be handled very carefully, without causing any sort of pain while moving or removing clothes.

7) Restore confidence and encourage the victim

Help the injured person to remain calm and assure him of all sorts of help. This will lessen his fear and panic and convince him that things are under control. Such reassurance and support will relieve shocks and speed up recovery.

8) Be prepared to treat shocks

You should be ready to handle any kind of shock.

9) Do not try force fluids or anything else in an unconscious state

Never try to feed anything to a person in an unconscious state as it may enter the windpipe and cause suffocation. Never try to arouse an unconscious person by shaking, slapping or shouting.

10) Always carry a first aid kid with you.

It is always useful to learn methods of first aid and make sure that you are always carrying your first aid kid with you. Label all the equipment so that you do not waste much time.
